Chinese Giant Stag Beetle (Dorcus hopei hopei) – A classic powerhouse with thick, impressive mandibles and a sleek, glossy black body. Known for its sturdy build, long adult lifespan, and relatively easy care, this species is a great choice for both beginners and experienced stag beetle keepers.

- Native Habitat: China, particularly central and southern regions

- Distinctive Features: Males are known for their broad head and thick, powerful mandibles with prominent inner teeth. Their deep glossy-black coloration and heavy build give them the classic “giant stag” look. Females are smaller with short, strong mandibles adapted for digging into wood during egg laying.

- Size: Male: approx. 22–83 mm / Female: approx. 22–51 mm

- Adult Lifespan Once Active: Approximately 2–3 years

- Larvae to Beetle: Approximately 8–12 months; development time may vary depending on temperature, genetics, sex, and substrate.

- Behavior: Generally calm and hardy, but males can be territorial toward other males. Their strong mandibles can also cause injury during fights.

- Substrate and Air Temperature: 68–77°F (20–25°C) is recommended. Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures. / Humidity: Approximately 60–70%

- Beetle Food: Beetle Jelly

- Difficulty: Beginner

- Housing Tips: Adult males should be housed individually. Avoid keeping multiple males together due to territorial fighting. For breeding pairs, monitor interactions and provide enough substrate, hiding areas, and appropriate egg-laying wood.

- Please contact us within 1 hour of the first delivery attempt and provide the following two forms of evidence:

1. Photos of the deceased animal

2. A video of the deceased animal with the shipping box visible next to it

- We will wait 3 days before requesting another video of the beetle. Stag beetles can sometimes appear completely inactive after shipping and may simply need time to recover.

- Shipping fees are non-refundable under all circumstances, as these fees are paid directly to the shipping carrier.

- Active beetles can be aggressive and hyperactive during transit, which means there is a possibility of self-inflicted injury. We do our best to pack every beetle safely; however, injuries sustained during shipping are not eligible for refunds.
