Kawaratake Kinshi:

A type of Kinshi that produced by Trametes versicolor fungus and it is the best companions for stag beetle larvae.

  • Preferred for most stag beetle larvae except Cyclommatus and Lucanus.
  • Optimum temperature: 68-75 °F (20-24  °C)

**This fungus doesn't thrive in hot weather.

Keep in mind:

  1. Please use it 2-3 days after the whole Kinshi turns white. Fresh Kinshi generates heat, which can stress the larvae.
  2. If you don’t intend to use the Kinshi immediately upon receipt, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 months.
  3. "Kawaratake Kinshi" fungi are somewhat sensitive and may attract unwanted bacteria, forming a thick, hard layer of mushrooms. If too thick, it might suffocate the larvae, so remember to scrape it off.
  4. Dorcus Titanus and Allomyrina Dichotoma love "Kawaratake Kinshi."
  5. Some claim using "Kawaratake Kinshi" can breed beetles with smaller rear ends.

To get a bigger beetle, here the things that you need to know!
When it comes to raising stag beetles, the Japanese are ahead of the game. They stumbled upon an interesting trick while observing stag beetle larvae in the wild. It seemed these little guys thrived on "wood that looked a lot like mushrooms." So, they decided to put some stag beetle larvae in jars where they cultivate mushrooms. What they discovered was mind-blowing! The beetles raised this way not only grew bigger but also spent less time as larvae. This marked the birth of the "mushroom method" for breeding beetles, and it quickly became the go-to approach.

What is "Kinshi" or "mushroom spawn"?

It's actually wood shavings generated from the fermentation process of shiitake mushroom cultivation. Feeding beetle Kinshi ensures they grow healthily and maintain top-notch quality for a long time.

These mushroom bottles are usually made by enthusiasts or beetle shops. They save space, are environmentally friendly by reducing waste, and are easy to store, exchange, and monitor.

Mushrooms are living organisms, and when it comes to temperature, they have their own preferences. If it's too cold, they freeze; if too hot, they dry out. The higher the temperature, the faster the wood decomposes, and Kinshi also decays more quickly. In fact, during mycelial growth, it can get quite hot, literally. The temperature inside the bottle can be 37-41 °F (3-5°C) higher than the outside. Initially, it might even rise by 50-68 °F (10-20 °C) . You don't want to put the larvae there; it's like a heatwave for them.
